English Resource Description
In the second lesson of Week 9, the focus is on reviewing the graphemes covered in the current and previous week. The objective is clear: to revisit and reinforce the children's understanding of specific graphemes, namely , , and . The lesson begins with a dynamic 'Tricky Word Race' where children read from a selection of tricky word flashcards. Initially, they read individually, sounding out words as needed, and then they participate in a team challenge to see which group can recognise the words fastest.
The teaching segment involves writing the graphemes on one side of the board and placing corresponding pictophones (visual aids) on the other. Children engage in an interactive exercise, drawing lines to match each grapheme with its related phonemes, such as with 'Eagle' and 'Egg', and with 'Chick', 'Sheep', and 'Kangaroos'. During the practice part of the lesson, a 'Sentence Sub' activity is conducted where a sentence is written on the board and children are asked to help read it. Words within the sentence are then substituted, prompting children to determine if the new sentence still makes sense. To apply their learning, a 'Scavenger Hunt' is set up. Children are provided with a checklist and must find image flashcards hidden around the area, writing down the number from the image card next to the corresponding word on their checklist. Teaching notes remind instructors that the focus is on phonemes, not the names of the pictophones, ensuring the correct teaching approach is maintained.
